WP4: HBSC study on 11-15 year olds

  • Objectives:
  1. To describe the magnitude of socio-economic inequalities in smoking initiation and smoking experimentation in 38 European countries (plus Israel,Canada and the USA) which have participated in the HBSC study in 2005/06;
  2. To identify which “intermediate” smoking-related factors from the peer group, family and school environment contribute to inequalities within individual countries, and to international variations in the size of inequalities among countries;
  3. To assess whether and how the magnitude of inequalities is associated with national tobacco control policies (e.g. price of tobacco, advertisement restrictions, restrictions to sales to young people) and with type of educational systems or welfare state regimes and policies.
